Dedication of Holy Cross Catholic Church

Dedications of a new church is not something that happens all too often. Especially in today’s culture, where churches are closing their doors, when a new one opens, it is a unique and joyous celebration for the whole Church. It is a once in a life time opportunity for the faithful to gather and to enter into the celebration.

Church dedications are unique as the Bishop dedicates the sanctuary as a holy place, worthy of celebrating the Eucharist. Much like human initiation into the Church, the Bishop moves through the three different stages of initiation. First, he sprinkles Holy Water on the building, reminding us of Baptism. Then, he consecrates the altar and walls with Holy Oil, reminding us of Confirmation and Holy Orders. Finally, the candles are lit and the altar is prepared. The Eucharist is then celebrated there for the very first time.
